Music at Lakelands Primary School

Our music program, provided by Stave House and approved by the London College of Music, offers a vibrant and comprehensive musical education for all students.

What we offer:
  • Weekly music lessons

    • Interactive learning: Combining academic musical notation, sight reading, performance, and appreciation of diverse musical styles.

    • Instruments and singing: Children explore tuned and untuned percussion, singing, musical theatre, and movement-based activities.

    • Professional guidance: Weekly sessions include live demonstrations and vocal coaching by professional musicians.

  • Key Learning Objectives

    • Play instruments and sing.

    • Develop an understanding of pulse and rhythm using sensory tactile notation tools.

    • Read and sight-read treble clef notation from Early Years Foundation Stage (EYFS) onwards.

    • Gain exposure to a variety of musical genres, including folk, classical, and film music.

  • Progressive skills development

    • FS and Year 1: Reading notes, clapping rhythms, and basic performances.

    • Year 2: Mastering Level 1 Stave House (e.g., treble clef spaces and simple rhythmic values).

    • Year 3 upwards: Advancing to Level 2 Stave House, playing pieces with quavers and dotted minims.

  • Creative opportunities

    • Composition: Starting from Year 1, children compose and express themselves through music.

    • Dance and action: Integrated into lessons to support self-expression.

Extracurricular activities:
  • Private lessons available

    • Vocal coaching, musical theatre, piano, violin, guitar, and recorder.

    • Opportunity for graded exams with the London College of Music.

  • Choir participation

    • Performances in joint school events, with future plans for group musical showcases.

    • Progression to Stave House Levels 3 and 4 for advanced theory, including bass and alto clefs and key structures.

Our commitment:

By the time children leave Lakelands, they will be able to read music independently and play from standard notation. This lifelong skill equips them to enjoy and share music in ensembles and beyond.
